Infrared (nano)spectroscopy for label-free diagnostics.

With this project we seek to apply our IR nanospectroscopy technology to visualize the fine structure of cells and tissue sections and to identify the changes in chemical composition when cancer occurs. We also engage in optical modeling of IR spectroscopy to provide a framework for better understanding the recorded spectral data and improve image quality. The following activities are foreseen, which can be tailored to the interests of the student: (i) do imaging work on cell sections to provide new insights on the structure of cells (ii) do optical calculation to understand of IR spectroscopy of cells work (iii) design and validate future lab-on-chip sensors for highly sensitive IR spectroscopy.

Development of an advanced near-field microscope for dual visible and infrared measurements at the nanoscale.

During this project, the student will work on a unique setup combining visible and infrared optical paths with the aim of developing a new modality of near-field measurement. A first step of the project will be the addition of a scanner into the laser path and its synchronization with other instruments. The refined control of the laser will open numerous opportunities of advanced nanoscopy measurements that will be subsequently explored. This project will be articulated around the following tasks: (i) development of a laser scanner, (ii) study of near-field signals from carbon nanotubes, (iii) comparison of different modes of operations for optically active nanomaterials.

Optical generation of coherent vibrational states in a molecular ensemble: exploring non-linear optics with quantum states.

One of the nano-optics group's recent milestones is the optical control of molecular vibrational states confined in nanostructures. Leveraging on this result, the student will study via an analytical model and numerical calculations the opportunity to optimize this control and create what is called in quantum optics a coherent state. The generation of quantum states of matter is of broad interest for many scientific communities nowadays. During this ambitious project, the student will have the opportunity to study how these states could impact nonlinear optics signals and how they could be advantageous for characterization of materials at the nanoscale. This project will be articulated around the following tasks: (i) optimization of cascaded nanostructure for large coherent excitation of vibration, (ii) quantum description of the generated state for the single molecule and ensemble cases, (iii) study of the coherent state impact on accessible nonlinear optics signals.
