PhD student - In-situ studies of nanoparticles growth and self-assembly using liquid cell transmission electron microscopy
The Nanoscience Cooperative Research Center CIC nanoGUNE, created with the mission of conducting world-class nanoscience research for the competitive growth of the Basque Country and recently recognized as a "María de Maeztu" Excellence Unit (2017-2021), is currently looking for a:
PhD RESEARCHER
To work on:
Nanoscale phenomena in Liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy
Liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM) has become an advanced tool for studying phenomena in liquids at the nanoscale. For instance, the growth of nanocrystals or self-assembly induced by an electron beam have been observed offering a deep understanding of the processes at the single particles level in real time. In this project we aim to setup a versatile liquid-cell station for studying the dynamics of nanoparticle self-assembly directly in the electron microscope.
This position will be co-supervised by Prof. Andrey Chuvilin from the Electron Microscopy group at CIC nanoGUNE and Dr. Marek Grzelczak from the Donostia International Physics Center.
The candidates should have a Master (or equivalent) degree in Physics, Materials Science or Engineering. We are looking for a candidate with proven experimental skills, good knowledge of data processing and basic experience in computer programming. Previous hands-on experience in operating electron microscopes will be beneficial, but is not a prerequisite for the position. A high level of spoken and written English is a must. The selected candidate will be responsible for the set-up and maintenance of the LCTEM infrastructure, the execution of in-situ self-assembly experiments using metallic nanoparticles as building blocks, analysis of the nanoscale phenomena and report writing.
NanoGUNE offers state-of-the-art equipment, a competitive environment, and the possibility of performing research at the highest level. The PhD student will be enrolled at the University of the Basque Country Doctorate Program (starting in September/October 2018). The position is available immediately.
The candidates should apply by completing the form below, attaching a cover letter, a complete CV, academic qualifications and at least one reference letter. All documents should be grouped together into a single PDF file.
