CIC09: Master project on ATOMIC SCALE PROPERTIES OF NOVEL TWO DIMENSIONAL MATERIALS

Presentación de Solicitudes

Desde: 01/04/2020 (UTC+01:00) Brussels, Copenhagen, Madrid, Paris

Hasta: 30/06/2020 (UTC+01:00) Brussels, Copenhagen, Madrid, Paris

Información:

Since the isolation of Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms, the study of two-dimensional materials became one of the most studied topics in the last two decades. Such ultra-thin materials, being just surfaces, exhibit outstanding and outperforming properties that do not exist in their bulk counterparts. The 2D materials that have been extensively studied so far, besides graphene, are hexagonal boron nitride and transition metals dichalcogenides.

In this master project, the candidate will focus on the growth and the characterization of the fundamental properties transition metal-based 2D materials. They consist on a layer of transition metal atoms sandwiched between two sheets of elements of higher electronegativity. These materials combine the two-dimensionality of their structure with extended collective properties such as magnetism or superconductivity.  With the combination of Low Temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) the master candidate will control the growth of such materials in ultra-high vacuum conditions and their chemical composition. The ultimate goal of this master project will be to find ultrathin metallic or semiconducting magnetic films and to map with atomic resolution their relevant physical properties.

This  Master project has a strong multidisciplinary characcer, involving ground knowledge of quantum physics, condensed Matter physics, and surface science,  and combines experimental work in different techniques that will provide the student with advance skills in surface experimental tools. It will be realized in the nanoimaging group in CIC nanoGUNE in collaboration with Dr. Martina Corso at the CFM.
