CIC08: Master project on ATOMIC LAYER DEPOSITION

Presentación de Solicitudes

Desde: 01/04/2020 (UTC+01:00) Brussels, Copenhagen, Madrid, Paris

Hasta: 30/06/2020 (UTC+01:00) Brussels, Copenhagen, Madrid, Paris

Información:

After preparation of graphene (single atom thick layer of carbon atoms), investigation of atomically thin films became one of the most studied fields. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers have the same atomic structure as graphene, but possess completely different electronic properties, making it a promising insulating material for electronic devices. However, fabrication of high-quality hBN thin stacks is still a subject of research. hBN stacks could be used for graphene and other thin layers encapsulation, providing properties boost due to absence of interaction with ambient media.

In this master project the candidate will focus on the growth of few layers hBN stacks by atomic layer deposition and their characterization. Materials properties will be investigated using a set of methods, usually employed for such kind of materials: Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The goal of the master project is the development of a novel method of hBN synthesis, which allows preparation of high quality hBN with controlled thickness.

This Master project has a strong multidisciplinary character, involving knowledge of inorganic chemistry, materials, and surface science, and combines experimental work in chemical laboratory with different structure investigation tools. It will be realized in the Nanomaterials group in CIC nanoGUNE.
