The Nanoscience Cooperative Research Center, CIC nanoGUNE, located in Donostia - San Sebastian, Basque Country (Spain), is currently looking for a

PREDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

to work on

Photonic detection of cancer

NanoGUNE is a research center devoted to conducting world-class nanoscience research for a competitive growth of the Basque Country. NanoGUNE is a member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA) and is recognized by the Spanish Research Agency as a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence.

The Nanoengineering group at nanoGUNE, led by Prof. Andreas Seifert, is currently composed of 9 members including senior and junior researchers. The group focuses on multidisciplinary research in photonics in combination with nanotechnology, machine learning and several engineering disciplines. More information can be found at https://www.nanogune.eu/nanoengineering

For this specific position, the nanoengineering group is developing machine learning-assisted multispectroscopy approaches for the detection and identification of lung tumors. Corresponding measurements will be done on human samples, provided by Biodonostia Health Research Institute.

The research will include:

  • Sample preparation
  • Development of measurement protocols for Raman, FTIR and SERS spectroscopy
  • Systematic spectroscopic measurements of human samples with high statistics
  • Development of data preprocessing algorithms
  • Development of machine learning methods for classification and prediction
  • Correlation of spectroscopic data with biochemical analysis provided by Biodonostia

This doctoral thesis will be co-supervised by Prof. Charles Lawrie from Biodonostia and will be carried out in close collaboration with the Molecular Oncology Group at Biodonsotia. It is expected that the candidate regularly stays in contact with and spends part of the working time at Biodonostia.

The successful candidate will have a Master degree in Physics, Mathematics, Chemometrics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering or any other related discipline and experience in the following skills:

  • Spectroscopic methods
  • Machine learning

Although not compulsory, the following points will be considered:

  • Self-motivated and a team player willing to coordinate the research in a particular topic.

We offer an international and competitive environment, state-of-the-art equipment, and the possibility to perform research at the highest level.

We promote teamwork in a diverse and inclusive environment and welcome all kinds of applicants regardless of age, disability, gender, nationality, race, religion, or sexual orientation.

The position is expected to start on March 1, 2021 and go on for a total of 36 months in the Nanoengineering group.

Candidates should apply by completing the form below and attaching the following documents:

  1. A complete CV
  2. A cover letter and at least two reference letters grouped in a single PDF file

The deadline for application is January 10,2021.
